 2016 Preview

Holly Pond finished the 2015 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Holly Pond finished seventh in Class 3A region five with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Broncos have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2011 season and would love to end that streak this year. They have never won a playoff game in the school's history.

Holly Pond struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 41.7 points a game.

The Broncos would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 1-19 record. Since 2010, the Holly Pond football program has struggled with a record of 8-53.

Over the past 25 seasons, Holly Pond has managed to compile a record of 92-165. Their 36.0% winning percentage ranks 49th in Class 3A and 311st in the AHSAA. Their last winning season was 2007.

The Broncos are led by head coach Mike Bates who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 1-29 over the past three seasons at Holly Pond. The Broncos have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Bates.

Coach Bates' overall record as a head football coach in twenty-seven season stands at 152-138 (52.4%). His 152 wins rank 20th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Bates' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of ten times and won five region championships. Coach Bates won a state championship at St. Pauls in 2007.

The Holly Pond Broncos will play in Class 3A region six during the 2016 season. Following realignment, the Broncos remain in 3A but move from region five over to region six.

Overall, the region is among the weakest in the state. Qualifying for one of the playoffs spots could be a little easier. This season, the Broncos will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region six.

The Broncos open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent Coosa Christian on Friday, August 19. Last year the Coosa Christian Conquerors finished with an overall record of 0-10 and in seventh place in Class 1A region seven. The Conquerors closed out the regular season with a loss to Donoho by a score of 28-6.

Holly Pond and Coosa Christian have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Broncos have a 2-0-0 record against the Conquerors. They last met in with
